Have you ever had one of those moments when you reach for your Android smartphone and it just doesn’t respond at all, and you’re faced with a frozen or totally black screen? If so, don’t panic. There are some simple solutions to get your phone to respond again, before you rush it to the nearest phone repair centre.
What should I do with a frozen or black Android screen?
Although it might sound too simple to be effective, the first course of action to take is to charge your phone for a few minutes. If your Android device is almost dead, the screen will display an ‘empty battery’ indicator on the screen when you try to turn it on. However, if your device is completely dead, there will not be enough power in it to display that message meaning that you’ll be left with zero response until the battery regains a little power.
Leave your device charging for 15-20 minutes before pressing the ‘power’ button. If this does not solve the problem, and your device is still unresponsive, a dead battery was not the cause of the problem and further investigation is needed.
My Android device still won’t turn on or start up. What should I do?
So you followed the advice above and nothing has changed. The next step is to pull the battery or long-press the power button. Similar to all other operating systems, Android can occasionally hard-freeze and decline to respond. If the software on your device has completely frozen, it might be powered on and running but the screen will not turn on because the operating system is frozen and not responding to any button presses.
To fix this, you’ll need to cut the power to your phone by removing the battery and forcing it to shut down and boot back up again. If your device is a newer model with no removable battery, you’ll have to long-press the power button for approx. 20 seconds to achieve the same result.
